Mount Myougi, Gunma

Extreme 9 KM Loop

Overview

The Mount Myougi hike in Japan is an incredibly fun trail that uses ropes and ladders to reach a knife-edge ridge. The hike itself isn’t too difficult but it would be more extreme for some people who are not familiar with the ropes. It does take some courage, upper body strength, and solid footing.

The trail starts at Myougi shrine and moves counterclockwise, first leading to the giant Japanese character “大” meaning “big”. You could walk just to here if the ropes are too intimidating as it starts to get much steeper as the trail moves up to the ridge.

The suggested active time for this hiking course is around 5-6 hours but may take more or less time depending on ability. It took me around 3-4 hours to complete.
